Isaac Bell & Catharine Hanger

Isaac Bell was born September 16, 1802 in Greene County, Pennsylvania to James Bell and Elizabeth Hays per the DAR records (James Bell A008721). According to census he was a farmer. Issac’s headstone lists his date of death as November 11, 1882. He is buried in Bell Church Cemetery in Knox County, Ohio¹.

Catharine Hanger was born February 26, 1802 in Virginia. She died February 12, 1878 and is buried in Bell Church Cemetery in Knox County, Ohio².

The 1850 US Census has the family living in Clay Township in Knox County, Ohio. There are three children living with them at the time, all attending school at the time. A John McMurlin, aged eight, is also living with them and attending school³. The 1860 US Census has them living in Morgan Township, Knox County, Ohio. The live on a farm worth $9,440 and having personal estate worth $3,000. None of the children live with them, but John (now listed as McNorland) lives with them. A Rachel Tuell, also aged eighteen, lives with them as well4. The 1870 US Census still has them living in Morgan Township. The farm is now worth $14,000 and their estate is worth $1,300. Phebe A Bell, aged twenty-two, is now living with them5. In 1880 Issac is still living on the farm in Morgan Township. He is living with Sidney Bell, aged twenty-two and listed as grandson, and with Almira Edwards, aged thirty three6.

*An Elizabeth A. Bell Paul (1828-1847), wife of William Paul, is buried in the Bell Church Cemetery. James, Alexander, and both parents are buried in Bell Church. One Elizabeth Ann Bell married one William Paul  on March 3, 1846 in Knox County, Ohio (the location of the Bell family). These two items would lead me to believe that Elizabeth Bell and Elizabeth Paul are one and the same. I have been unable to find proof of that fact.
